Kenyan student develops solar-powered car - PHOTOS

A Kenyan student is the latest inventor of a solar powered automobile and his invention is making the rounds on the country’s social media space.

Twitter posts said 30-year-old Samuel Karumbo, who is from Kitale polytechnic , has the car parked in Langas Eldoret Town.

The two-seat four-wheeler has a solar panel across its back. Some inscriptions on it include: ’0% pollution,‘SOLAR CAR’ and ‘Made in Kenya.’ The car is said to have the capacity to on full charge to cover about 50 km in a day.

Almost a year ago, a similar invention was put together by students of Ghana’s Premier engineering university, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) located in the resource rich Ashanti region.

 

The first version of the environmentally friendly automobile was outdoored during a graduation ceremony of the university. The invention of the 4×4 vehicle was in partnership with the Technical University of Munich, the state-owned Daily Graphic reported at the time.


It was developed by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Physics, and is seen as a breakthrough for the West African nation as it explores ways to build a more robust automobile industry.

In what looks like a script written for the consumption of the Western world, a foremost economist, renowned for her antecedents, has frowned at the increasing Chinese economic in-roads in Africa.
As ties between China and African countries continue to get stronger, former Nigerian Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned that Beijing-style economic governance will not work in Africa.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said at a forum last Tuesday in Abuja that in toeing the Chinese system, corruption could result from increased government intervention in business.
In her view, Nigeria’s “vibrant private sector does not lend itself to the type of state-led development that China stands for”. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who had worked creditably in the World Bank for decades, understands comparative economics and investments well. And she is not known for sensational talk,

The notable economist, however, admitted that Ethiopia, an East African country with high percentage economic growth, is following Beijing’s state-led approach and seems to be doing well for now.

 KAMITI MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON, Kenya (Reuters) – Host nation Russia beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 at the opening match of the World Cup on Thursday, exactly mirroring the scoreline of a match played on a dirt pitch in a jail in Africa thousands of miles away.
As part of their rehabilitation, inmates at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in rural Kenya are playing their own version of the soccer tournament, with teams named after the countries competing at the real thing.
In Thursday’s opener, watched from the sidelines by inmates in blue and white striped uniforms, “Russia” beat “Saudi Arabia” 5-0 – the same score marked up hours later by the real teams in Moscow.

“The game was good even though I peaked late,” said 23-year-old Byron Otieno, serving life for murder, who scored two of Russia’s five goals.
Joseph Kirai, a volunteer who organised the 7-a-side competition with a local church, said the idea was to use the interest in the real World Cup to bring inmates together for a positive experience.
“Our major goal is to transform the inmate through sports,” Kirai said.

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) – Unidentified gunmen shot dead a prominent newspaper editor and two security guards in India’s Kashmir on Thursday, police said.
Syed Shujaat Bukhari, editor of the Rising Kashmir newspaper, was leaving his office in the city centre of Srinagar when he was shot by three assailants on motorbikes, Senior Superintendent of Police Imtiyaz Ismail told Reuters.

Bukhari, who was given police protection following an attack on him 18 years ago, was hit by multiple bullets fired at a close range, Ismail said. There was no immediate word from police on the identity or possible motive of the gunmen.
Bukhari had been a strong advocate of peace in disputed Kashmir, at the heart of decades of hostility between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the Muslim majority region.
India had suspended operations against militants fighting its rule in Kashmir during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan which began last month, after weeks of sporadic violence there.

Waseem Ahmad, a local journalist, told Reuters that he heard gunfire ringing out and, reaching the location, found Bukhari and his two guards lying in a pool of blood in their car.
“Extremely shocking news,” said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who broke down in front of cameras.
“Terrorism has hit a new low with Shujaat’s killing,” Mufti said on Twitter. “We must unite against forces seeking to undermine our attempts to restore peace. Justice will be done.”
Bukhari had been part of India’s delegation for informal peace talks on Kashmir with Pakistani representatives held in Dubai last year. He was instrumental in organising several conferences for Kashmir peace.
Condemnation of his killing in Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu and Kashmir state, and condolences poured in from across the country.
Calling Bukhari a fearless journalist, Indian Interior Minister Rajnath Singh said on Twitter the killing was an act of cowardice and “an attempt to silence the saner voices of Kashmir”.
More than 130 people have been killed this year in militant violence in Kashmir.
“Forces inimical to restoring peace in the Kashmir valley have silenced a voice of reason, logic and peace,” the Press Club of India said in a statement, mourning the loss of Bukhari.
India has long accused Pakistan of training and arming militants and helping them infiltrate across the heavily militarised Line of Control (LoC) that separates the two sides in the region, a charge Islamabad denies.
The attack on Bukhari coincided with discussions being held over an extension of a ceasefire by security forces in Kashmir.
Earlier, India rejected a U.N. report that accused it of having used excessive force in disputed Kashmir to kill and wound civilians since 2016, and which called for an international inquiry into accusations of rights violations.

It was December 2, 2015. And Denis Cheryshev, a Real Madrid academy product and the first Russian to ever play for Los Blancos, scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 away victory over Cadiz in the two teams' Copa del Rey round-of-32 second-leg tie.
Two days later, Real were eliminated from the competition. Cheryshev had been barred from playing in the match. He should have been serving a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards in the previous edition of the tournament, back when he was loaned to Villarreal, and so Real were thrown out on a technicality.

The club alleged they hadn't been notified of his ban. The player hadn't known of his punishment, either. But the incident effectively ended Cheryshev's career at Real Madrid. He was loaned back to Villarreal and then sold to them for €7 million the following summer. Now, at the Bernabeu, he is only a rival.

"Now that don't kill me, can only make me stronger"

On the same day he became the face of an embarrassing episode for the club, Cheryshev posted a motivational message on Twitter: "Now that don't kill me, can only make me stronger."
Nearly 1,000 days later (920 to be exact), in the opening game of the 2018 World Cup played on home soil, his message appeared prophetic. Cheryshev began Russia's Group A bow against Saudi Arabia on the bench. But in the 24th minute, Russia's star striker, Alan Dzagoev, left the match with a hamstring injury, so the ex-Real Madrid man quickly warmed up and took his place.
And in the 43rd minute, redemption. After receiving a pass from Roman Zobnin in the box, Cheryshev loaded up his left foot, but two defenders threw themselves onto the ground to stop the shot. So the Russian showed his ability, lifting the ball over the fallen defenders and, with space, fired home Russia's second goal in spectacular fashion.

 The superb strike marked the Russian midfielder's first for his country. And he apparently enjoyed the experience so much that he scored his country's fourth in a 5-0 rout, with a sumptuous outside-of-the-boot finish from the edge of the area.
But no matter what happens from here, one thing, we can say, is for certain: Cheryshev's firsts are always unforgettable.

Special Presidential Investigation Panel, SPIP, for Recovery of Public Property has informed that the Federal Government is working with the United Kingdom to ensure that identified treasury looters are no longer issued visa.

This came as SPIP announced the recovery of $7 million (N2.1 billion at official rate) illegally kept in a bank (name withheld), as well as N533 million and land worth N1.5 billion, all from the “previous management” of NEXIM Bank.

Chairman of the panel, Okoi Obono-Obla, disclosed this while briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on activities of the panel. The spokesperson of the SPIP, Lucie-Ann Laha, who made this known in a statement, said the recovered funds and property had since been returned to the bank. He said the SPIP was partnering with the United Kingdom’s Home Secretary to ensure that some public officers “perceived to have looted public funds and illegally acquired assets both in Nigeria and the UK” were prevented from entering that country.

Mr Obono-Obla stated that the panel had also recovered and returned to the National Theatre, N24 million which was allegedly diverted by some directors of the agency. Also recovered, he said, were two hectares of land in Abuja valued at over N2 billion, belonging to the National Council of Arts and Culture. The chairman further told President Buhari that the panel also recovered and returned a part of Agura Hotel belonging to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). He said the recovered part of the hotel had been illegally “annexed by some so-called powerful persons with untouchable connections for over 20 years”.

Other recoveries by the SPIP, according to Mr Obono-Obla, are 19 official Sports Utility Vehicles allegedly made away with by former commissioners of the National Population Commission after their tenures in office. He said the panel had charged a former Director in the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to court for failure to declare his assets. The assets include houses in upscale areas of Abuja, a quarry and a farm within the Federal Capital Territory, for which a court has granted an interim forfeiture order, he said. “The SPIP is also investigating some members of the National Assembly and former governors for a range of alleged offences. “These include illegal purchase of designated official residences for principal officers of the National Assembly excluded from the monetisation policy at giveaway prices. “Others are purchase of several property worth hundreds of millions in various currencies, and flagrant abuse of office thus causing financial adversity to the nation.”
