NUT commences indefinite strike in Nasarawa

Nigeria-Union-of-Teachers
The Nasarawa State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday embarked on an indefinite strike over the payment of salaries to its members in bits and pieces.
Titi Jatau, the state Chairman of the union, said this to newsmen in Lafia immediately after the state executive council’s meeting of the union.
He said that the strike was necessitated by the inability of the state government to respond to the 21-day ultimatum given it by the union which expired on Wednesday, Jan.27.
The chairman said: “Apart from the half payment of their salaries for many months now, other grievances include; non-payment of January 2015 salaries’ arrears, lack of promotion and lack of teaching aids in schools.
“Since January 2015, the government has not supplied chalks and instructional materials to primary schools across the state”.
He said that since 2015, the state government had stopped supplying chalks and other materials for teaching adding that this had prevented the teachers from teaching effectively.
The chairman said that the Universal Basic Education Boards (UBEBs) had the statutory responsibilities of overseeing the activities of primary schools across the country.
He urged the state government to revert the monitoring of all the primary schools in Nasarawa State to its UBEB.
“The state government should remove all our activities from the local government areas and return them to the state UBEB”.
The chairman said that the strike was not aimed at sabotaging the efforts of the government, but to press home the teachers’ demands.
He said that the union had sent the circular of the strike to all its branches, adding that members of the union would continue to stay at home until their demands were met.
